More Than an IV: The Relationships That Shape Healing

When people think of an infusion nurse, they often picture vitamins, IV poles, and lab values.

But what I wish more people knew is this:

The most meaningful part of my work goes far beyond the nutrients infused, but the connection that unfolds over time.

At Ashland Natural Medicine, patients don’t just come in for a quick treatment and leave. They come weekly, monthly, and sometimes during the hardest seasons of their lives- cancer treatment, burnout, hormone shifts, chronic illness.

Over time, something beautiful happens.

We talk about symptoms and health goals, yes.

But we also talk about relationships, children, fear, hope, travel plans, and the invisible parts of what we’re carrying through life.

Healing becomes less transactional and more relational.

As a nurse, I am trained to assess vitals signs, watch for reactions, monitor safety. But I also notice what isn’t on a chart:

The way someone’s shoulders drop halfway through their infusion. The relief in their voice when they say, “I finally slept.” The way they feel lighter than when they arrived.

In conventional settings, care can feel rushed. At Ashland Natural Medicine, we have time. Time to check in, time to explain, time to adjust and time to sit quietly.

And I’ve learned something over the years:

When patients feel safe, they heal differently.

The nervous system matters. Trust matters. Feeling heard matters.

I’ve watched people walk in overwhelmed and leave lighter- not just because of nutrients or oxygen therapy, but because someone was present with them.

The relationships we build in this clinic are not accidental. They are part of the medicine.

It is an honor to witness people in vulnerable moments. To celebrate clear scans. To support through hard labs. To cheer for small wins.

From the outside, it may look I am “just” starting IVs.

From the inside, it feels like I am walking alongside people on their healing journeys.

And that, to me, is the most meaningful part of being a nurse.
